A small crossover study of six competitive male runners found that three weeks of post-training sauna bathing increased running time to exhaustion by 32% compared with the control period. Plasma volume increased by 7.1%. Scoon and colleagues, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

That result concerns a particular exhaustion test, not a claim that runners became 32% faster. The small sample and demanding protocol make it useful early evidence, rather than a beginnerโ€™s training prescription.

Improvements alongside regular exercise

An eight-week randomized trial involving 47 adults with low activity levels and cardiovascular risk factors compared exercise plus sauna, exercise alone and a control group. Adding sauna produced a greater improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness than exercise alone, with a between-group difference of 2.7 mL/kg/min. Lee and colleagues, 2022.

Long-term associations worth understanding
